No. 5 Houston handed No. 2 Virginia its first defeat of the season after holding out for a 69-61 victory in an AP Top 5 clash in men’s college basketball action on Saturday (17). The win here at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, was the first for the Cougars against an AP Top two team on the road. Click Here For Box Scores.

Jarace Walker had 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists, Tramon Mark added 13 points and six rebounds and Marcus Sasser ended with 13 points for Houston (11-1) which shot 49.0% overall as a team.

Jamal Shead supported with 11 points and J’Wan Roberts made his last four shots to end with 10 points to go along with six rebounds for the Cougars, who have won two straight since losing to Alabama earlier this month.

Kadin Shedrick led the way for Virginia with 16 points on 7 of 8 shooting from the field. Jayden Gardner had 13 points and six rebounds and Armaan Franklin finished with 10 points and six boards for the Cavaliers (8-1) who had won their first eight games to start the season and were even considered to be the nation’s best team. Houston jumped out to an early 9-0 lead in the opening minutes before taking a 30-26 advantage at halftime.

The Cougars then build a 54-44 lead with 4:38 left in the game and then held on for the victory.
