FARGO, N.D., Sporting Alert - Vinnie Shahid scored 21 points and led three teammates scoring in double figures and North Dakota State beat Cal Poly 74-67 in a Veterans Day clash inside the Scheels Center on the NDSU campus on Monday. Complete Box Score
Shahid shot 6 of 10 from the field and made 7 of his 8 free throws for North Dakota State (2-1), which won two straight after losing to Kansas State in its season opener.
Also reaching double figures in scoring for the Bison were Tyson Ward, who had 14 points and seven rebounds and Cameron Hunter, who ended with 13 points.
North Dakota State had 27 points off the bench, while 32 of the total points came in the paint.
As a team, the Bison shot almost 46 percent and made 25 of their 31 attempts from the free-throw line.
Junior Ballard had 20 points with five rebounds for Cal Poly, who remains without a win in two games so far this season.
Jamal Smith added 17 points and six rebounds and Colby Rogers scored 10 points for the Mustangs (0-2), who led 33-30 at halftime, but was outscored 44-34 in the second half.
The game was locked at 51 midway through the second half, but North Dakota State used a 7-0 run to open up the lead and then resisted any comeback thoughts from the travelers.
NDSU returns to action against Texas Rio Grande Valley on Friday, while Cal Poly welcomes Simpson University, Calif. on Friday.
