Notre Dame Cross Country Invitational 2015 Results

Notre Dame, IN, Sporting Alert – UTEP stunned the big names to capture the men’s team title at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Cross Country Invitational on Friday.

Led by top three finishes by Anthony Rotich and Jonah Koech in the Men’s Blue 5 mile race, UTEP finished first in the battle for the team crown with 89 points.

Rotich clocked 23:49.1 to take first place in the individual race, while his team-mate Koech was third in 23:49.5. Cosmas Boit (24:07.5), Antony Kosgei (24:20.6) and Daniel Cheruiyot (24:33.1) were the other scoring runners for UTEP.

Finishing second in the overall team race was No. 27 North Carolina State with 97 points, after having three runners finished in the top 10.

Third went to No. 26 Colorado State (126), No. 23 Southern Utah (134) was fourth and the top five was completed by Purdue (169).

No. 17 New Mexico was 9th, No. 18 Arizona State was 19th with 473 points.

The host Notre Dame was 10th with 239 points.

Matt McClintock of Purdue was second with a time of 23:49.5 in the individual contest, with the top five runners in the men’s Blue 5 mile completed by Meron Simon of NC State in 23:53.8 in fourth and Hayden Hawks of Southern Utah fifth with a time of 23:55.4.

On the women’s side, the nation’s No. 1 team New Mexico easily dispatched all the challengers after scoring 29 points to take the team crown.

No. 14 NC State scored 74 points for second place, No. 20 Notre Dame was third with 143pts, 14th ranked Vanderbilt scored 150pts for fourth place and Utah polished off the top five with 164pts.

Led by Courtney Frerichs, who finished second in the Women’s Blue 5K in 16:27.0, New Mexico finished with four runners in the top six and all five scorers in the top 12.

Rhona Auckland fourth with 16:28.9, Alice Wright fifth in 16:29.5, Calli Thackery, sixth in 16:40.6 and Molly Renfer, 12th in 16:52.7 were the other top finishers for New Mexico.

NC State’s Ryen Frazier took the women’s individual race in 16:22.9, with Molly Seidel of Notre Dame getting third in 16:28.3.
