NEW YORK (Sporting Alert) — Top seeds Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic marched into the fourth round of the US Open Tennis tournament with victories in the third round in Flushing Meadows, New York.
Djokovic, the No. 1 seed from Serbia and 2011 champion, beat American Sam Querrey 6-3 6-2 6-2 at Ashe Stadium.
The 2011 champion will now meet 22nd-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber, who dumped 13th-seeded John Isner in the third round contest again.
The German Kohlschreiber defeated Isner, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) and he is looking forward to facing the top seeded player as he seeks to take down another big gun.
Also securing third round wins were No. 8 Andy Murray of Great Britain who beat Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov, 6-1 7-5 4-6 6-2, No. 3 Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, who had a walkover win over Slovenia’s Blaz Kavcic, who picked up an injury, while No. 9 Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Pablo Carreno of Spain, 6-4 6-4 6-4.
On the women’s side, world No. 1 Serena Williams continues her march towards winning another US Open title with an easy 6-3, 6-3 straight set victory over Varvara Lepchenko.
The American is joined in the fourth round by impressive Canadian rising star and seventh-seed Eugenie Bouchard, who defeated the 30th-seeded Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4.
However, third-seed Petra Kvitova was upset, 6-4, 6-4 by Aleksandra Krunic, with Kaia Kanepi dumping the 15th-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro, 7-5, 6-0.
