TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Roman Penn scored 21 points and four players scored in double figures as Drake pulled away late for a 73-66 victory over Indiana State at the Hulman Center to secure its 11th straight victory of the season.

After an evenly contested first half, which was carried over into the second period, Drake, which rallied from two 9-point deficit in the first half – pulled away in the final 2:37 to improve to 11-0 and remain undefeated in the COVID-19 pandemic campaign.

“I’m proud of our guys and their ability to stay with it and fight through it against a really good Indiana State team,” Drake head coach Darian DeVries said on the school’s website.

The Bulldogs (11-0, 2-0 Missouri Valley) led 59-58 with just over two and a half minutes remaining before scoring 14 points from the free-throw line to set up the win.

Penn, who was collecting his second 20-point game of the season, shot 9 of 12 from the field and had six assists and four, rebounds, while Joseph Yesufu scored 13 points off the bench and ShanQuan Hemphill finished with 12 points and three rebounds for Drake, which swept Indiana State following Sunday’s 81-63 win.

Darnell Brodie finished with 10 points on 5 of 6 shooting to go with eight rebounds for the Bulldogs, who are the first 11-win team this season.

Jake LaRavia paced Indiana State (3-4, 0-2) with 20 points on 8 of 11 shooting, with Cooper Neese adding 18 points and four rebounds in the defeat.

Tyreke Key scored 11 points for the Sycamores, who led 29-25 at halftime but were outscored 48-37 after the break.

“We got everything we anticipated from Indiana State, they came out ready to fight and our guys were too.” DeVries added. “It’s a league game and it’s what conference basketball is all about. It’s going to come down to winning by five, six points.”
