Australia, after being down five for 97 and shaking from all angles, recovered once again on the back of brilliant innings from Steve Smith, who scored a scintillating hundred.
Smith shared in a 128 for the sixth wicket partnership with wicketkeeper/batsman Brad Haddin, who scored 75 on the day as Australia survived to tally 326 all out.
All-rounder Ben Stokes led the England bowling attack with six wickets for 99 runs.
The day was made to be even better for hosts after pace bowler Mitchell Johnson removed opener Michael Carberry for a duck to leave England at eight for one at stumps.
Australia lead the five-match series 4-0 and is pushing for the 5-0 clean sweep.
