NEW YORK, Sporting Alert – Scores and results from 2016 U.S. Open Men’s and Women’s Singles Round 1 matches on Tuesday’s day 2 in New York.

World number Serena Williams made what was expected to be a difficult challenge looked easy after the American comfortably put away Ekaterina Makarova of Russia in her first round game at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After older sister Venus won her match earlier on the night, Serena beat Makarova 6-3 6-3 to earn a passage into the second round as well.

Leading the list of winners in the morning session on the second day of competition were Simona Halep and Kei Nishikori, who advanced to the second round of the tournament, but there was a big shock on the women’s side, as the struggles of Ana Ivanovic extended this year after the No. 29 seeded Serbian was dumped in round one.
