Serena Williams at US Open

NEW YORK, Sporting Alert – Scores and results from 2016 U.S. Open Men’s and Women’s Singles Round 1 matches on Tuesday’s day 2 in New York.

World number Serena Williams made what was expected to be a difficult challenge looked easy after the American comfortably put away Ekaterina Makarova of Russia in her first round game at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After older sister Venus won her match earlier on the night, Serena beat Makarova 6-3 6-3 to earn a passage into the second round as well.

Leading the list of winners in the morning session on the second day of competition were Simona Halep and Kei Nishikori, who advanced to the second round of the tournament, but there was a big shock on the women’s side, as the struggles of Ana Ivanovic extended this year after the No. 29 seeded Serbian was dumped in round one.

In women’s singles action, the fifth-seeded Halep easily put away Kirsten Flipkens to signal her intentions of winning the final grand slam of the year.

The Romanian won 11 straight games on her way to a comfortable 6-0 6-2 victory over Flipkens of Belgium who looked very relieved when winning her first game during the second set after she found herself trailing 5-0 again on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

Joining Halep in the second round on Tuesday were No. 25 seed Caroline Garcia of France who recovered from a set down to beat countrywoman Pauline Parmentier 4-6 6-3 6-4, and the 31st seeded Timea Babos of Hungary who also came from a set behind to top Austria’s Barbara Haas 5-7 6-3 7-5.

American sixth-seeded Venus Williams slipped past Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova 6-2 5-7 6-4 in her first round contest.

According to ESPN Stats & Info., Williams, the 2000 and 2001 champion, was winning her 77th match at the U.S. Open and the American improved to 18-0 in the first round.

In men’s singles contest, the sixth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan battled out a 6-1 6-1 3-6 6-3 win over Germany’s Benjamin Becker to secure his place into the 2016 U.S. Open second round.

Bulgaria’s 22nd seed Grigor Dimitrov beat Inigo Cervantes of Spain 6-2 6-4 7-6(7) to advance as well, so too did the tournament’s 27th seed Alexander Zverev of Germany who picked up a 3-6 6-1 6-4 7-6(4) victory against his countryman Daniel Brands.

Ivanovic led the way among those exiting the 2016 U.S. Open early after she was beaten 7-6(4) 6-1 by Czech Republic’s Denisa Allertova.

Going out in the opening round as well on Tuesday were No. 23 seed Darya Kasatkina of Russia who went down 6-4 2-6 6-2 to Wang Qiang of China in women’s singles action and the 20th seed Kiki Bertens of Netherlands who was beaten 6-3 2-6 6-4 by Croatia’s Ana Konjuh.
