Leading the way on the third day of competition is world number one Novak Djokovic, who will be hoping for a better performance from the one he displayed in his first-round victory on Monday.

The Serbian looked a bit shaky in the defence of his crown when he picked up a hard fought 6-3 5-7 6-2 6-1 win over Jerzy Janowicz of Poland, and his fitness was once again called into question.

It is understood that Djokovic is battling with a right elbow and left wrist injuries, which has been affecting him since Wimbledon 2016.

On Wednesday in his second round outing, Djokovic will seek to improve against Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic who is hoping to take advantage of the top seed's wobbles.

Vesely defeated the world No. 1 on clay in Monte Carlo earlier this year but the Serbian 12-times grand slam champion said that will not affect him in Wednesday's meeting.

"Different surface, different circumstances, best-of-five," said Djokovic.

"But still, Vesely deserves respect. He's somebody that has been kind of trying to break through as the next generation.

"A couple of years ago, he already was there. He made a name for himself. Just gained the consistency, I think, over the last couple of years.

"He has a big game, a big serve, big forehand, and moves well for his size. So let's see.

"Obviously, he hasn't played many times on the Arthur (Ashe) Stadium. Conditions are quite suitable to my style of the game.

"Hopefully I'll be able to slow his serve down a little bit and then take it from there."

Meanwhile, another potential title challenger, fourth-seeded Rafa Nadal, will take on Andreas Seppi of Italy in his round 2 match at the 2016 US Open on Wednesday night.

An Injury forced Nadal to pull out of the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this year and the Spanish star revealed that he is recovering from the wrist injury that has been bothering him.

Among the top seeds in action in women's singles are Australian Open champion and No. 2 seed Angelique Kerber of Germany, who will meet Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia, as well as the third-seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain, who takes on Latvian Anastasija Sevastova.

No. 14 seed Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic plays Turkey's Cagla Buyukakcay, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark meets No. 9 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, while eighth seed Madison Keys of USA faces countrywoman Kayla Day.

In men's singles, Canadian fifth seed Milos Raonic will also play in the second round on Wednesday.

The 2016 US Open Live streaming coverage is on  ESPN 3 and WatchESPN, while the tournament is also be available via Eurosport Player the those living in the UK.
