LONDON (Sporting Alert) — Manchester United have made a £40million bid for Chelsea want-away midfielder Juan Mata through a third party, SkySports News is reporting on Wednesday.
David Moyes has been looking to freshen up his squad in the January transfer window after an embarrassing try in the summer, and it is understood that Mata has emerged high on the United manager’s list.
Mata, who was instrumental for Chelsea last season, has been constantly overlooked by Jose Mourinho since he returned to Stamford Bridge, and the player made it no secret that he wants to leave the club.
Neither Chelsea or Manchester United have confirmed that a bid had been made, but SkySports is reporting that an offer has been made.
It is also understood that the Spanish international missed training on Wednesday, with several media outlets in the UK suggesting that he is now a few steps away from sealing a move to Old Trafford.
Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guilleme Balague also revealed that all the parties involved in the deal are hoping that it will go through, with reports claiming that the transfer will take place before the weekend.
Earlier it had been suggested that Chelsea wanted Wayne Rooney to be part of any move involving Mata, but Manchester United, SkySports says, declined to add the England international in the deal.
