DOHA, QATAR (November 23) —— Spain opened their World Cup 2022 campaign with an impressive display after destroying CONCACAF side Costa Rica 7-0 in a Group E opener for both teams at Al Thumama Stadium on Wednesday’s Day 4.
A brace from Ferran Torres and a goal each from Gavi, Dani Olmo, Marco Asensio, Carlos Soler, and Alvaro Morata guided Luis Enrique’s side to the top of the group and just one win away from booking a place into the second round with Germany next to come.
With his goal today, midfielder Gavi became the youngest European goal scorer in World Cup history, when he scored the fifth goal for Spain in the 74th minute.
In the other Group E game, Japan stunned 2014 World Cup champions Germany 2-1, and they will also fancy their chance of making the knocking round with Costa Rica next on the schedule.
Spain who fielded a mixture of young and veteran players today won with total dominance after claiming 82 percent of the ball possession in the way-too-early statement about their tournament credentials.
