After losing six straight games to start the season at 1-6, Kentucky (4-7, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) has been slowly finding its way back and has won three of the last four games before falling to Alabama, 85-65 in a blowout loss.

Tuesday night’s defeat to the Crimson Tide snapped a run of three straight wins for the Wildcats, who are beginning to show some sign of confidence.

Three players reached double-digits in scoring for Kentucky against Alabama, with Isaiah Jackson finishing with 14 points off the bench, Devin Askew scoring 12, and Keion Brooks Jr. adding 10.

“We didn’t show up today, we didn’t execute that well,” Askew said after the loss.

Meanwhile, Auburn (7-6, 1-4) picked up its first conference win against the winless Georgia on Wednesday to snap a four-game losing streak and eased off .500 overall this campaign.

Freshman Sharife Cooper was the highlighted player for the Tigers in the win after he finished with 28 points, 12 assists, five rebounds, and two steals.

Cooper who was only cleared to play by the NCAA last week, is averaging 27 points, 4.5 rebounds, 10.5 assists, and 2.5 steals in two games.

Allen Flanigan is averaging 13.8 points with 5.1 rebounds and shooting 50.0% from the field for Kentucky after 13 games, while Justin Powell is putting out 11.7 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.7 assists. He is also shooting 44.2 percent from 3-point range.

The Wildcats will be hoping to take better care of the ball against Auburn after its offense turned it over 14.9 times per game coming into this contest.

No. 15 Auburn Falls 30-22 at South Carolina; Second Defeat This Season For Tigers

By:Sports Desk Published on: October 17, 2020 5:24 pm Leave a Comment

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Tank Bigsby raced past the 100-yard mark for the second straight game and scored his first collegiate touchdown Saturday but No. 15 Auburn lost 30-22 at South Carolina.

Bigsby passed the century mark in the fourth quarter on runs of 30 and 19 yards, setting up Anders Carlson’s third field goal made it a one-score game with 6:36 to play. Bigsby gained 111 yards on 16 carries.

Auburn’s defense held the Gamecocks to one first down before the Tigers got the ball back with 2:15 to play, needing to go 80 yards with no timeouts.

Auburn drove to the Gamecocks’ 12-yard line with 9 seconds remaining, but on fourth-and-5, Bo Nix was tackled at the 9-yard-line, two yards short of the first down.

Auburn scored on the opening drive of the second half to lead 19-14 after marching 54 yards on 11 plays and converting two downs to set up Carlson’s second field goal, a 35-yarder.

The Gamecocks answered with a 75-yard touchdown drive, taking a 20-19 lead on a 10-yard touchdown pass. South Carolina’s attempted two-point pass was incomplete with 6:31 left in the third quarter.

Owen Pappoe’s first career interception ended South Carolina’s red zone threat late in the third quarter, but the Gamecocks regained possession with their third interception and scored on an 8-yard run on their next play to lead 27-19 with 54 seconds left in the quarter.

Auburn led 16-14 at halftime after scoring on its first two possessions. After the Tigers’ defense forced a three-and-out on the game’s opening possession, Auburn drove 62 yards on 14 plays with Carlson kicking a 35-yard field for a 3-0 lead. Nix’s 22-yard pass to D.J. Williams on third-and-9 keyed the drive.

After Auburn forced another three-and-out, the Tigers drove 56 yards on seven plays with Nix hitting Eli Stove for an 11-yard touchdown on third-and-10. Going for two, Auburn’s pass was incomplete, giving the Tigers a 9-0 lead with 4:33 left in the first quarter.

South Carolina intercepted the first play of the second quarter at Auburn’s 29-yard-line, capitalizing on the turnover and short field with a 3-yard touchdown run that cut Auburn’s lead to 9-7.

Nix and Seth Williams then combined on Auburn’s longest pass play of the season, a high arcing 44-yard gain that showcased Williams’ physicality. Tank Bigsby capped the drive with his first Auburn touchdown, a 2-yarder, to put the Tigers ahead 16-7 with 10:24 remaining in the half.

South Carolina converted another turnover into a touchdown, intercepting Nix after a deflection at midfield and scoring on a quarterback sneak with 35 seconds left in the half.

Zakoby McClain led Auburn with 13 tackles and a sack, his third straight double-digit game. Pappoe added 10 tackles.

Auburn remains on the road next Saturday when the Tigers travel to Ole Miss at 11 a.m. CT.

Saturday’s opener will begin at 12 p.m. ET with SEC Network broadcasting the coverage. Tom Hart, Jordan Rodgers and Cole Cubelic will be on the call. The Jordan-Hare Stadium, which usually close to 90,000 spectators, will be reduced to 20 percent because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the home side, including head coach Gus Malzahn, is looking forward to the game.

“When it’s a regular game day and we’ve got 90,000 fans, there’s no better place in all of college football as far as atmosphere than here,” Malzahn said.

Auburn student section will provide great atmosphere

Kentucky offensive line could give Auburn fits

Stoops praises Wilson, believes QB is strength for UK

“The fact that the majority of our fans are going to be students – our student section is always one of the best, if not the best in the country, and I know they’re going to have their A-game and will be loud as possible to help us win.”

After months of uncertainty, Malzahn is excited about getting football back on the schedule, noting that he’s particularly looking forward to seeing this year’s team play.

“I’m really excited about this year’s team,” Malzahn added. “We have all kinds of new faces out there. I believe we have 13 new starters, so I’m really excited to watch this team grow.

“If we stay healthy, we’ll have a chance to improve each game, and of course with 10 SEC games, it’s important for teams to improve throughout the year.”

Meanwhile Kentucky enters this game on a four-game winning run, dating back to last year.

One of the highlighted players returning for the Wildcats is senior quarterback Terry Wilson, who is back after he missed the final 11 games of last season, following a patellar tendon tear in his right knee against Eastern Michigan in the second game of the season.

“He missed the year and that hurts but he’s still older and wiser and has more understanding of the offense,” UK coach Mark Stoops said.

“It comes with reps. We’ve got to have a great week and he’s got to get out there and get started. We’ll ease into it with a road game at Auburn.”

Matt Stinchcomb Top 5 SEC Offensive Line For 2015 Season

By:Milton Blake, College Sports Writer Published on: July 30, 2015 8:30 am 1 Comment

Deemed as the powerhouse conference in college football, SEC Network analyst Matt Stinchcomb takes a look at the top five Offensive Lines in the Southeastern Conference for the 2015 season.

You can watch the video for the full views, but here is a brief summary:

Stinchcomb picked Alabama at No. 5 with the views that there are still question marks over the type of offensive line the Crimson Tide will put out this coming season, with only senior Ryan Kelly and sophomore Cameron Robinson being the two highlighted returners from the last campaign.

At No. 4 he selected Arkansas, who was not in his preseason rankings a year ago.

Nevertheless, despite being at No.4 and ahead of Alabama, Stinchcomb still thinks the Razorbacks, who he said “were a better protectors and pushers” during the last term, still has some work to do, especially against some of the top teams in the conference.

Sitting at No. 3 are LSU, but Stinchcomb made this pick on the views that the Tigers will improve on the numbers they put up on offense during the recent term when they barely pass the ball.

Although they are returning just four starters in that offensive line from last season, Auburn picked up the No. 2 ranking.

And as expected, Stinchcomb selected Georgia as the team with the best offensive line in the SEC for the 2015 season, despite the departure if star center David Andrews.

The Bulldogs, who had the top scoring offense last season will return the likes of Greg Pyke, and John Theus, who are expected to pick up from where they left off a year ago.

So Here Is Stinchcomb’s SEC Top Five Offensive Lines

1) Georgia
2) Auburn
3) LSU
4) Arkansas
5) Alabama

Rivalry Week: NCAAF Clashes On ESPN3 and ESPN Networks

By:CEDRIC HANCOCK Published on: November 29, 2014 10:58 am Leave a Comment

(Sporting Alert) — The following is the NCAA college football top 25 schedule for Saturday, Nov. 29.

No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Oregon, No. 3 Florida State and No. 4 Mississippi State will all be in action on the day, as the college football playoffs hunt continues.

The highlighted clash in Week 14 will undoubtedly come from the Vaught-Hemingway Stadium where Mississippi State and rival Ole Miss will do battle.

The matchup carries a lot of weight for the Bulldogs (10-1, 6-1 SEC) who must win this game if they are to stay in the top four in the college football playoffs rankings.

No. 19 Ole Miss will want to win this one as well, as they seek to reclaim the Egg Bowl trophy they lost in overtime at Mississippi State last season.

“I know this one is pretty intense and sometimes in my opinion it crosses the line to what is good and all of that,” head coach Hugh Freeze said.

“I want to beat them as bad as they want to beat us, particularly two days out of the year — this Saturday and then National Signing Day.”

No. 5 TCU made their statement for a place in the CFP top four with a 48-10 victory over Texas on Thursday night and the Texas outfits could leap-frog the Bulldogs if they fail to impress against the Rebels this week.

“It’s the last regular season game,” Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen said. “You have to leave it all out there on the field.

“You kind of work year-round for this type of game. It will be fun. I know we will being going into a hostile environment.

“It’s a tough place to go play. I don’t think they are big fans of mine in that part of the state. It should be a great challenge for us.”

Ole Miss (8-3, 4-3 SEC), who started impressively with a 7-0 record until back-to-back defeats to LSU and Auburn ended their playoffs hopes in early November, will be desperate to recover from the shocking 30-0 shutout against the Arkansas Razorbacks a week ago.

Top-ranked Alabama also have a strong date on the schedule as they lineup against No. 15 Auburn in the Iron Bowl at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The Crimson Tide (10-1, 6-1 SEC) suffered a 34-28 defeat to the Tigers last season when they were No. 1 in the country, so there will be some nervous moments heading into this fixture again.

“I think the Iron Bowl is one of the greatest rivalries in college football,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said.

“This game means a lot to a lot of people in this state, regardless of which side you’re on, and also around the country. As a competitor, it’s a great opportunity because this game has had a lot of significance over the past few years and it’s certainly no different last year or this year.

“It will be a great atmosphere, ESPN, night game here, Bryant-Denny Stadium has been great. I also think this is a game where you have to stay focused on the game and not all the things that go on around it.”

Also on Saturday, No. 3 and defending champions Florida State (11-0, 8-0 ACC), still perfect on the season, will take on the Florida Gators, No. 2 Oregon (10-1, 7-1 Pac-12) will be at Oregon State, No. 6 Ohio State host Michigan and No. 7 Baylor tackle Texas Tech.

NORMAN (Sporting Alert) — Texas A&M pulled off the upset of the week in college football Week 11 top 25 action on Saturday after they beat No. 3 Auburn 41-38 at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

#458649328 / gettyimages.com

Kyle Allen threw for 277 yards and four touchdown passes to lead the Aggies (7-3, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) to a victory that will almost certainly ended Auburn’s (7-2, 4-2 SEC) hopes of making the playoffs.

But while the Tigers were struggling at home, No. 1 Mississippi State were battering Tennessee-Martin, 45-16 at Davis Wade Stadium, with Dak Prescott throwing for 206 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing 48 yards for another score in the victory.

No. 6 TCU kept its playoff hopes going with a 41-20 victory over No. 7 Kansas State.

Quarterback Trevone Boykin threw for 219 yards and a touchdown and ran for 123 yards for another three scores to lead the way for the Horned Frogs (8-1, 5-1), which picked up its fourth successive victory.

Aaron Green ran 18 times for 171 yards and a touchdown, coming in for the injured B.J. Catalon, while Tyler Lockett caught the ball 11 times for 196 yards and scored a touchdown. The performance by the senior wide receiver from Tulsa, Okla., now sees him tallying career receiving yards of 3,073, which moved him past his father’s K-State record of 3,032, set from 1993-96.

There were also big wins on the day for No. 12 Baylor, who hammered No. 15 Oklahoma 48-14 in Norman.

The Sooners jumped off to a 14-3 first quarter lead, but were then held scoreless by the Bears (8-1, 5-1 Big 12) in the next three-quarters of the game.

Bryce Petty threw for 387 yards on 32 for 42 passes and sophomore Corey Coleman set a career high with 224 receiving yards in the win for Baylor.

Petty admits that he had been looking ahead for this fixture.

“There was something about this game,” Petty said after the game. “This game, for me, was circled, dotted, starred, whatever you want to call it on the calendar.

“I don’t like to make that public because every game’s a big game, but I really wanted to win this game.”

The win by TCU over Kansas State and Baylor’s victory, created a three-way tie atop the Big 12 standings with the Bears, Wildcats and Horned Frogs all sitting with a 5-1 league record with three games left in the regular season fixtures.

Meanwhile, quarterback Jameis Winston and No. 2 Florida State rallied from a shaky start to score a 34-20 victory over Virginia at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee.

The game also saw receiver Rashad Greene collecting a career-high 13 receptions for 136 yards and a touchdown, for the Seminoles (9-0, 6-0 ACC), who secured its ninth win on the season and 25th straight successive.

Elsewhere on Saturday, No. 5 Alabama scored and overtime 20-13 win over No. 16 LSU and No. 14 Ohio State had an upsetting 49-37 victory over No. 8 Michigan State.

In other college football top 25 results on the day, No. 11 Ole Miss had little trouble keeping Presbyterian scoreless in a 48-0 shutout, No. 9 Arizona State scored a massive 55-31 victory over No. 10 Notre Dame to end a 3-0 series losing streak, while Texas, upset No. 23 West Virginia, 33-16.

College Football Week 10 Scores and Results

By:DWAYNE SIMPSON Published on: November 2, 2014 11:10 am Leave a Comment

NEW YORK (Sporting Alert) — Scores, results and records from the College Football Week 10 action that took place this on Saturday.

No. 1 Mississippi State survived a strong challenge from a very determined Arkansas side to stay undefeated this season and improved to 8-0 with a come from behind 17-10 victory.

Dak Prescott threw for a personal-record 331 yards on 18-of-27 passes and one touchdown, to lead Mississippi State to the win after they fell 10-0 early in the action.

“Our guys are finding ways to win,” winning head coach Dan Mullen said. “That’s all that matters.”

The Bulldogs, who struggled to get going during the early phases of the contest, turned the ball over three-times in the first half when things were just not going their way, but the confidence never left.

“At halftime, we just had to relax,” Prescott said.

“We know we’re a high-powered offense and that we’re always only one play away from scoring.”

Meanwhile, the highlighted game of Week 10 came from the Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, where No. 3 Auburn held on for a 35-31 victory over No. 4 Ole Miss.

Both teams battled throughout the night and shared the lead on several different occasions, but it was the Tigers, who ended on top after holding their nerve late in the game.

Nick Marshall completed 15-of-22 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns for Auburn, but the highlighted moment came late in the game when Ole Miss’ receiver Laquon Treadwell, looked well set to score the winning touchdown, fumbled the ball at the goal line, and then broke his leg with less than two minutes left in the game.

Cassanova McKinzy reacted quickly to recover the ball in the scramble, although replays had to be used to clarify the decision.

“I knew it was a fumble and I thought we got it,” Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. “The coaches up in the press box told us we had it, so I knew we were going to get the ball.”

With two defeats already on the season, it looks like Ole Miss’ (7-2) chances of making the playoffs is all but over.

Other winners on the day were No. 5 Oregon, No. 7 TCU, No. 9 Kansas State and No. 10 Notre Dame.

However, No. 11 Georgia fell 38-20 to Florida and No. 12 Arizona went down 17-7 against No. 22 UCLA.

On Thursday, No. 2 Florida State (8-0) came back from a 21 point deficit to beat No. 25 Louisville, 42-31.
