NEW YORK, Sporting Alert – Fifth-ranked Duke is one of eight top 25 college basketball team on the schedule for Sunday, November 22.
The Blue Devils (3-1) will take on Georgetown (1-2) in the 2K Classic championship game.
The defending national champion defeated a very spirited VCU team 79-71 in the opening round of the 2K Classic at Madison Square Garden on Friday night, with guard Grayson Allen scoring a career-high 30 points in the win.
Allen was bouncing back from a poor performance against Kentucky, and Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski revealed how they dealt with it.
“We have a thing on our team, a standard, we tell each other the truth. So you confront it,” Krzyzewski said after the win over VCU. “He didn’t play well against Kentucky.
“He didn’t have a good look and he didn’t adjust. That was his first big time start too, it’s not like Grayson’s a combat veteran. So I was hard on him but honest.”
Georgetown booked their place into Sunday’s 2K Classic championship game with a 71-61 victory over Wisconsin.
The Hoyas (1-2) were led by Isaac Copeland, who scored 15 points and eight rebounds and Reggie Cameron, who ended with 14 points in a reserve role on Friday night.
Before the win over the Badgers in the 2K Classic semifinal, Georgetown dropped games against Radford in overtime and No. 3 Maryland.
Allen heads into the game on Sunday averaging 22.5 points per game, while Amile Jefferson is averaging 13.0 points per game and shooting 72.4 percent from the floor.
Freshman guard Derryck Thornton, who started in place of Allen against VCU, scored a career-high 19 points, but could be back on the bench on Sunday.
Georgetown will be led by senior D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera, who is averaging 13.7 points, 4.3 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game.
