NORTHERN IOWA 71, NO. 1 NORTH CAROLINA 67

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Wes Washpun had 21 points and eight rebounds and Northern Iowa used a sharp second half to stunned No. 1 North Carolina 71-67 in college basketball top 25 action on Saturday.

The Panthers (2-1) who shot 42.1 percent from the field, used a 29-8 second half run to erased a 16-point deficit and turned it into a 63-58 lead over the Tar Heels (3-1) with 5:12 left to play.

Matt Bohannon added 19 points and six rebounds, and Paul Jesperson finished with 14 points and seven boards for Northern Iowa, which won two in a row since dropping its season opener against Colorado State.

Jeremy Morgan chipped in with 10 points and three steals for the Panthers, who play Dubuque on Wednesday at home.

Justin Jackson led the top-ranked North Carolina with 25 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Kennedy Meeks collected 10 points and nine rebounds and Brice Johnson added 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks in the defeat for the Tar Heels (3-1), who continue to be without leading guard Marcus Paige.

In fact, it is understood that coach Roy Williams added the trip to Cedar Falls on his schedule this season so the senior could play in his home state for the last time in college basketball,

However, Paige is yet to recover from a broken bone in his right hand and couldn’t feature at the McLeod Center.

The Tar Heels will next face Northwestern at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri, on Monday night.

NO. 19 CONNECTICUT 83, FURMAN 58

STORRS, Conn. — Shonn Miller had 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting and pulled down seven rebounds and No. 19 Connecticut beat Furman 83-58 in a college basketball game on Saturday.

Jalen Adams had 14 points, six assists and two steals off the bench, and Rodney Purvis added 13 points and seven assists for the Huskies (3-0), who will face No. 24 Michigan on Wednesday night.

Matt Rafferty had 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists and Geoff Beans added 14 points for Furman (2-2) in the defeat.
