Video highlights and key moments as Virginia Tech stunned No. 3 Villanova 81-73 in overtime on Saturday night. Villanova has won both its previous games of the season before this defeat.
Re-lived some of the key moments and top plays of the game, as Keve Aluma scored 22 points and Nahiem Alleyne added 20 to setup the upset win for Virginia Tech.
Tyrece Radford added eight points and 13 rebounds for the Hokies (2-0), who outscored the Villanova 17-9 in the overtime play.
“I thought we guarded so very well throughout, and we did it again over a five-minute period in the overtime and found a way to win,” coach Mike Young said. “A huge win for us.”
The Wildcats (2-1) were hoping for a third win of the season, but came up short in the end.
Collin Gillespie scored 18 of his 25 points in the first half to lead the Villanova, while Caleb Daniels added 17 points and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl finished with 14 in the defeat.
The Wildcats had taken control when they used an 11-0 run to build a lead and held Virginia Tech scoreless for five minutes.
However, the Hokies smartly chipped away at the lead to come back into the game and even took a 64-62 lead with 1.3 seconds remaining, but Villanova managed the send the game into overtime.
“You learn when you have a lead and you’re playing against a good team, you’ve got to play every possession until the end,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. “So, we’re definitely going to learn that the hard way.”
Notably, Virginia Tech got the better of the Wildcats on the boards, outrebounding them 40-31.
“I’m not sure we’ve ever outrebounded anyone,” Young said. “I’m not sure we ever outscored another team, certainly not in the Atlantic Coast Conference in the paint.
“That’s what I’m comfortable with. That’s how I’ve always wanted to play.”
