MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota’s Marcus Carr drilled a step-back 3-pointer to force overtime and then the Golden Gophers went on to upset No. 4 Iowa 102-95 on Christmas.

Minnesota trailed Iowa 83-80 with 0:19 seconds left in regulation after Jamal Mashburn Jr. made a pair of free throws.

However, Carr came to his team’s rescue when he connected on one of his six 3-pointers with 0:05 seconds left to force the extra period.

Brandon Johnson then took over to hit all four of his 3-point attempts in overtime to help seal the win.

Carr, a junior guard from Toronto, Canada, ended the game with 30 points on 9-for-16 shooting with eight assists for the Golden Gophers (8-1, 1-1 Big Ten) who were beating a ranked team for the first time this season.

It was also the first win for the team against a ranked opponent since the 75-67 victory over 19 Michigan on Jan. 12.

Big Shooting From Johnson

Johnson added 26 points and connected on 8-for-9 from 3-pointers to go with eight rebounds, while Liam Robbins had 18 points four rebounds and four assists for Minnesota, which made 17 shots from beyond the arc.

Luka Garza led the fourth-ranked Hawkeyes (7-2, 1-1) with a monster double-double of 32 points and 17 rebounds, while CJ Fredrick scored 23 points and made five 3-pointers.

Iowa was losing for the second time this season after suffering a 99-88 defeat to No. 1 Gonzaga last Saturday.
