WIMBLEDON, Sporting Alert – Already completed results on Day Six at Wimbledon 2016, a day that has been impeded by rain.
Before the rain delays, though, the likes of No. 5 Simona Halep and No. 4 Angelique Kerber both collected wins in women’s third round singles, while No. 5 Kei Nishikori and No. 9 Marin Cilic got wins in men’s singles.
But the shocking result of the day came after the rain, when world No. 1 and defending champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia was beaten 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 3-6 7-6 (7-5) third-round by American Sam Querrey.
Djokovic entered the day training by two sets, and although he battled back to win the third set, the Serbian, after another rain delay, failed to overcome the deficit and was knocked out the 28th seeded player.
“It’s incredible, especially to do it here at Wimbledon,” said Querrey.
“I’m so ecstatic, so happy. I played the break points well and every time he had a break point I was able to come up with a big serve.
“He came out and got the first four games, fortunately for me we had another rain delay and I got to regroup. I’m just taking it one round at a time, I’m not even sure who I’m playing next.”
Meanwhile, on Centre Court, Romanian Halep picked beat Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands in two sets, 6-3 6-4 and Germany’s Kerber had a 7-6(11) 6-1 victory over unseeded fellow countrywoman Carina Witthoeft.
Meanwhile, Japan’s Nishikori used little effort to sweep past Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov 7-5 6-3 7-5 on Saturday to advance to a fourth-round Wimbledon tasty showdown with Marin Cilic.
Croatian Cilic defeated Lukas Lacko of Slovakia 6-3 6-3 6-4 to earn a place in the fourth round.
Elsewhere on Saturday, No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland advanced to fourth round of Wimbledon 2016 with a 6-3 6-1 win over beat Katerina Siniakova of Czech Republic, while USA’s No. 9 seed Madison Keys beat Alize Cornet (France) 6-4 5-7 6-2.
No. 2 Andy Murray moved into the fourth round with a 6-3 7-5 6-2 win over John Millman of Australia.
