Wimbledon 2016 Results: Day 8 Men’s and Women’s Singles

LONDON, Sporting Alert – Results from women’s and men’s singles matches that took place on Day Eight at Wimbledon 2016 on Monday, July 4.

American sisters Venus and Serena Williams both secured round four victories in women’s singles, while Andy Murray and Roger Federer, the seven-times champion highlighted the list of winner in men’s singles action.

World number one Serena overpowered no. 19 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia 7-5 6-0 to power her way into the Wimbledon 2016 quarterfinals on Centre Court.

The match was suspended at 5-5 for the roof to be closed, but after that, the six-time winner was unstoppable, winning the last eight games of the contest.

Next up for Serena is a quarterfinal matchup against another Russian, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Meanwhile, her sister Venus, the no. 8 seed at the tournament, beat Spain’s No. 12 Carla Suarez Navarro, 7-6(3) 6-4 to move into the quarterfinals.

Elsewhere on the women’s side, No. 4 Angelique Kerber of Germany beat Japan’s Misaki Doi 6-3 6-1, while in the battle of No. 10 seeds, No. 5 Simona Halep of Romania defeated No. 9 Madison Keys of USA, 6-7(5) 6-4 6-3.

In Wimbledon 2016 men’s singles results on Monday’s Day Eight, second-seeded Andy Murray earned a 7-5 6-1 6-4 over Australia’s No. 15 Nick Kyrgios, No. 3 Roger Federer of Switzerland beat Steve Johnson of USA, 6-2 6-3 7-5 and Canada’s No. 6 seed Milos Raonic defeated Belgium’s No. 11 David Goffin, 4-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-4.

American Sam Querrey, who knocked out world number one and defending champion Novak Djokovic in the third-round, beat Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 6-4 7-6(5) 6-4 to reach his first grand slam quarterfinal.

He said: “If I didn’t win, there would have been a lot of: Wow, it was kind of a fluky match against Novak because you didn’t back it up.

” … I definitely knew if I lost, it would have been: Hey, you beat Novak, but obviously that was just like one special moment.”
