ROCK HILL, S.C. — Chandler Vaudrin scored 17 points and led three other Winthrop players in double-figure scoring, and the Eagles defeated Gardner-Webb 91-83 on Sunday to stay perfect this season.
Vaudrin also had eight rebounds, six assists, and two steals as Winthrop extended its season-opening winning streak to 11-0 to edge closer to last season’s 14-0 run. The Eagles have now won 16 straight games, dating back to the end of last season, a feat which is the third-longest in program history.
Charles Falden had 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting with three 3-pointers, D.J. Burns Jr. ended with 14 points (6-of-11), four rebounds, and three blocks and Russell Jones Jr. had 11 points for the Eagles (11-0, 8-0 Big South Conference).
Jacob Falko paced Gardner-Webb with 20 points, five rebounds, and three steals.
Jaheam Cornwall added 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting with nine assists and D’Maurian Williams contributed 12 points off the bench for the Runnin’ Bulldogs (3-8, 2-4), who also lost to Winthrop 75-65 on Saturday.
As a team, Winthrop shot 58.8% from the floor on 30 of 51 and made 10 for 21 from 3-pointers.
Gardner-Webb scored a season-high 46 points in the first half on 59% shooting less than 24 hours after shooting 30% to open Saturday’s game.
The Eagles trailed 46-40 at halftime, but outscored the Runnin’ Bulldogs 51-37 in the second half to set up the win.
