WORLD CUP: EUROPE RESULTS AND RESULTS – Sept 6

LONDON (Sporting Alert) — England, Russia, Portugal and Spain were all winners on Friday, while the Netherlands and France were among the teams held in their FIFA 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

A double from Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck and one each from captain Steven Gerrard and Rickie Lambert, who has now scored two goals in two appearances for the national team, guided England to a comfortable 4-0 win over Moldova.

Victory saw Roy Hodgson’s side moving ahead of Montenegro to the top of the European Group H standings. Montenegro played to a 1-1 draw in Poland.

Cristiano Ronaldo netted a hattrick and Portugal eased past Northern Ireland 4-2, while Russia, on a brace from Aleksandr Kokorin, hammered Luxembourg 4-1 at home.

World champions Spain beat Finland 2-0 with Jordi Alba and Alvaro Negredo getting the goals.

Meanwhile, Manchester United forward Robin van Persie scored a late penalty deep into stoppage for the Netherlands to take a point in Estonia, after Konstantin Vassiljev scored twice for the home side.

Georgia held the mighty France 0-0 on a disappointing night for the visitors, who saw Spain extend their lead at the top of the standings.
