NEW YORK (Sporting Alert) — Top seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia was among the winners on the opening day of the 2014 U.S. Open Tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, in Flushing Meadows, New York on Monday.
Djokovic, who was runner-up to Rafael Nadal of Spain last year, comfortably brushed aside Diego Schwartzman of Argentina, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4
The 27-year-old Djokovic, won the title at the 2011 U.S. Open.
The third-seeded Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland, a semi-final at the last edition and the Australian Open winner, defeated Czech Republic’s Jiri Vesely, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3), while there were victories on the day as well for No. 5 Milos Raonic, No. 8 Andy Murray and No. 9 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Raonic got the better of Taro Daniel, 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1), Murray battled to a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), 1-6, 7-5 win over Robin Haase, and Tsonga defeated Juan Monaco, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.
However, No. 24 seed Julien Benneteau was beaten 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 by Benoit Paire.
Defending champion Nadal is out of the tournament because of an injury.
