Li Na, who started the tournament on good form and was one of the favorites to win the title, surprisingly lost her opening round match in three sets.

The Chinese, who lifted the title at Roland Garros in 2011, and is reigning Australian Open champion, fell 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 to Kristina Mladenovic of France.

Her defeated comes a day after Stan Wawrinka, the Australian Open men’s champion and third-seed on the male side was also eliminated in the first round.

Meanwhile, there was no problem for the fourth-seeded Simona Halep, who moved past Alisa Kleybanova, 6-0, 6-2.

Still to come on the day are No.10 Sara Errani, who will face Madison Keys, No. 11 Ana Ivanovic against Caroline Garcia and the 23rd-seeded Lucie Safarova vs. Mandy Minella.

On the men’s side, No. 5 David Ferrer and the seventh-seeded Andy Murray are both in action on Tuesday.
