TROON, Scotland, Sporting Alert – The leaderboard in the first round on the opening day at the 2016 British Open at the par-71 course on Thursday in Troon.

Phil Mickelson leads four Americans in the top five in the first round, with Patrick Reed, Justin Thomas, Steve Stricker and Billy Horschel, Tony Finau, defending champion Zach Johnson resting right behind their countryman.

Mickelson finished the day with a eight-under-par 63 through the first 18 holes at Royal Troon and he leads midway leader Reed and Kaymer of Germany who are tied for second with five-under-par 66.

Thomas, Stricker, Horsche, Finau, Kjeldsen of Denmark, Great Britain’s Andy Sullivan, Johnson and USA’s Keegan Bradley  ending the first round with four-under-par 67.

Great Britain’s Justin Rose started strongly by ended with three-under-par 68, while Britain’s Rory McIlroy goes to bed on two-under-par 69.
