NO. 1 NORTH CAROLINA 78, WOFFORD 58

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Brice Johnson had 16 points and 14 rebounds and led three other teammates into double-figures, and No. 1 North Carolina cruised to a 78-58 win over Wofford in a CBE Hall of Fame Classic college basketball game on Wednesday.

Johnson, who went 7-for-12 from the floor, also had two steals and two blocks for the top-ranked Tar Heels (3-0), who outscored Wofford 44-29 in the second half.

Kennedy Meeks shot 8-for-15 from the field and scored 16 points and eight boards, while Joel Berry II also added 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting and collected four assists and four steals for North Carolina, which shot 51.6 percent (32-62) from the floor.

“I think our team was better today than we were Sunday,” North Carolina coach Roy Williams said.

“Defensively, we talked more. We were more consistent with it. They’re a hard team to guard.”

Jaylen Allen scored 15 points for Wofford and Justin Gordon added 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Terriers (0-2).

Spencer Collins scored 11 points and Fletcher Magee ended with 10 in the defeat for Wofford, which was outrebounded 42-25.

They hit nine 3-pointers and twice fell behind by double figures before rallying to make it a one-possession game.

No. 10 GONZAGA 91, NORTHERN ARIZONA 52

SPOKANE, Wash. — Domantas Sabonis scored 26 points off the bench, and No. 10 Gonzaga beat Northern Arizona 91-52 to finally open its college basketball campaign.

Gonzaga was officially making a season opener after their first game against Pittsburgh was called off at halftime last Friday because of a slippery court during the Armed Forces Classic in Okinawa, Japan.

Sabonis, who played 21 minutes is a reserved role, went 12-for-13 on shooting and also grabbed seven rebounds.

Kyle Wiltjer added 23 points and boards and Silas Melson finished with 10 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs (1-0).

Kris Yanku scored 18 points to lead Northern Arizona (0-3) with Ako Kaluna adding 11 points and seven rebounds.
