Day 8 Results: U.S. Open Women’s and Men’s Singles Round 4

NEW YORK (Sporting Alert) — Men’s and women’s singles scores and results from Day 8 at the 2014 US Open Tennis tournament at Flushing Meadows, New York on Monday’s Labor Day.

The action on the day saw No. 1 seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams both recording wins in the fourth round and booked quarterfinal places.

Top seed Djokovic of Serbia scored a 6-1 7-5 6-4 victory over the No. 22 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany to setup a quarterfinal matchup with No. 8 seed Andy Murray of Great Britain.

“I’m very glad obviously that I had so many consecutive quarter-finals of grand slams,” said Serbia, who was making his 22nd successive grand slam quarterfinal.

“It says that I do value these tournaments the most and try to always perform my best tennis in them.

“Obviously it motivates me for the future to continue that streak.”

In his fourth round contest, Murray continued his march towards winning the US Open title after defeating France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5 7-5 6-4 to earned his place in the last eight.

Kei Nishikori of Japan, the 10th seed also won a quarterfinals place, following an exciting victory over the fifth-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic.

Nishikori recovered from losing the opening set, to battle his way to a 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (6/8) 7-5 6-4 victory over his Canadian opponent and booked a last eight date with the third-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, who beat 16th seed Tommy Robredo from Spain, 7-5 4-6 7-6(7) 6-2.

On the women’s side, world No. 1 and two-time defending champions Serena Williams of USA cruised to a straight set 6-3 6-3 victory over Kaia Kanepi of Estonia.

Elsewhere, the 17th-seeded Ekaterina Makarova of Russia stopped the run of Canadian rising star and No. 7 Eugenie Bouchard, following her 7-6(2) 6-4 victory in the fourth round.

The 11th-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy beat Australia’s 29th seed Casey Dellacqua, 7-5 6-2.
