Duke Sloppy, But Okafor Stars In Win – Box Score

DURHAM, N.C. (Sporting Alert) — The numbers were very good for freshman Jahlil Okafor, but Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski couldn’t say the same about his team’s overall performance despite sealing a win.

A dominant Okafor grabbed a double-double of 25 points and 20 to lead No. 2 Duke to a 75-62 win over Elon at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Monday night.

Okafor, who shot 10 of 14 from the field was scoring a season-high in the points column, while his 20 rebounds was a freshman school record. He also had three blocks and two steals in his team’s ninth consecutive victory, but said it didn’t feel the same.

“This is the worst we’ve felt all year after a win. “We played sloppy today,”  said Okafor, who according the stats gurus, became the first NCAA DI freshman to collect 25 points, 20 rebounds and three blocks in a single game since 2007.

Victory meant that the Blue Devils were extending the country’s longest home win streak to 38 successive, but Krzyzewski was also not impressed with the way his team played.

“I’m not satisfied with the way we played tonight,” the veteran coach said. “We didn’t do hard things tonight. That comes from layoff, them playing hard, people telling us how good we are

“… We have four freshmen of nine guys. We’ve got a long way to go. We did not do hard things tonight.”

Krzyzewski acknowledged Okafor individual performance.

“It was a helluva performance,” he said. “Through the ups and downs that we had collectively as a team tonight, he was our one bright and shining spot.

“He was consistent, rebounding the ball, scoring the ball, and just overall creating offense.”

Duke was playing for the first time since beating then-No. 2 Wisconsin, 80-70 in a road game on Dec. 3 and Krzyzewski admits the hosts looked rusty.

Amile Jefferson contributed 13 points and five rebounds and went 6 of 7 from the floor, with fellow forward Justise Winslow adding 12 points for the Blue Devils (9-0).

Luke Eddy scored 16 points on 7 of 9 shooting off the bench to lead Elon (5-5), but he was the only Phoenix player to score in double figures on the night.

With his performance on the boards, the talented Okafor, who was celebrating his 19th birthday, joined former Maryland player Joe Smith (1993-94) as the only freshmen in ACC history to score 20 points and 20 rebounds in a game.

“We didn’t know whether to double (Okafor) right away, double on the dribble, play one-on-one,” Elon coach Matt Matheny said.

“He’s a very, very difficult matchup.”

Guard Rasheed Sulaimon had with 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Blue Devils, who will next face the defending champion Connecticut at IZOD Center on Thursday night.
