Manchester United: English Premier League

LONDON, Sporting Alert – Leicester City moved three points clear at the top of the English Premier League standings, while there were wins for Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham on Tuesday.

Leicester, the surprise package this season, defeated Liverpool 2-0 at the King Power Stadium with the EPL leading goalscorer Jamie Vardy netting a brace, including a brilliant first-time half-volley strike from 25 yards which flew over Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet on the hour mark.

The strike was achieved in front of the watching eye of England boss Roy Hodgson and he enjoyed the wonder goal.

Vardy doubled the lead 11 minutes later when he finished off a deflected shot from Shinji Okazaki as the Liverpool defense fell apart during the build up.

The win on Tuesday helped the Foxes to move three points clear at the top of the standings over Manchester City which they will next face on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Citizens stayed in touch with a 1-0 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Leading striker Sergio Aguero provided the lone goal for Manchester City — scoring his 17th of the season, while goalkeeper Joe Hart came up with a few important saves and youngster Kelechi Iheanacho showed some life in his 45 minutes of action.

The visitors’ all-important goal came in the 16th minute when Spanish winger Jesus Navas fired in a cross that fell kindly for Aguero, who does what he does best, keeping his composure to control and then stabbed home.

Tottenham in the meantime, jumped one spot to third place in the EPL standings after thrashing Norwich City 3-0 at Carrow Road.

England forward Harry Kane bagged a brace and wonderkid Dele Alli added another for Spurs to go ahead of Arsenal on goal difference, with both teams sitting on 45 points.

Arsenal failed to cut the gap between them and Leicester City after they were held 0-0 by Southampton at the Emirates Stadium.

Elsewhere on Tuesday’s busy day in the English Premier League, Manchester United took down Stoke City 3-0 at Old Trafford, with French striker Anthony Martial scoring the pick of the goals for the Red Devils.

Jesse Lingard opened the scoring in the 14th minute for Manchester United before captain Wayne Rooney found Martial at the far post with a delightful pass which setup the second for the home side.

The speedy forward, who started on the left flank again, took the pass from Rooney well before curling home a splendid shot into the far corner to send the fans at Old Trafford on their feet again.

After the break, Martial returned the favour to Rooney, who steered home a cross into the bottom of the goal in the 53rd minute.

Playmaker Juan Mata, who started in the No. 10 role, Michael Carrick, who constantly kept Stoke City on the back foot by playing forward passes and young left-back Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, were a few of the highlighted standouts in the win for Manchester United.

In other results, Crystal Palace fell 2-1 to Bournemouth at Selhurst Park, West Bromwich and Swansea City finished at The Hawthorns, while West Ham beat Aston Villa 2-0 at Upton Park.
