There were victories on the day for Arsenal, Hull City and Tottenham, but Manchester United were stunned at Old Trafford by Swansea City in Louis van Gaal’s debut in the English Premier League.
In the early kick-off on Saturday, Manchester United season got off to the worst possible start to the season after losing 2-1 to Swansea City, as Ki Sung-Yueng and Gylfi Sigurdsson netted the winning goals for the victors.
New skipper Wayne Rooney scored the lone goal for Manchester United, which had initially cancelled out Ki’s strike.
At the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal defeated 10-man Crystal Palace 2-1, with Aaron Ramsey scoring a late winner for the Gunners.
Brede Hangeland had put the Eagles ahead, but Laurent Koscielny levelled things up just before the half-time break. Jason Puncheon was sent off for Crystal Palace after he picked up two yellow cards.
Elsewhere, Aston Villa edged Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium, while Tottenham and Hull City collected a similar result over West Ham and QPR, respectively.
At Loftus Road Stadium, Chris Wood scored an 86th minute equalizer for Leicester City to earn a 2-2 draw with Everton.
