LONDON (Sporting Alert) — The English Premier League standings and fixtures on Saturday, February 28.
Leaders Chelsea are five points ahead of defending Champions Manchester City, but will be inactive in the EPL this weekend as they prepare to take on Tottenham in the Capital One Cup at Wembley on Sunday, March 1 .
This means that Manchester City can cut the gap to two points with a victory against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
The Citizens were beaten 2-1 by Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16 in midweek, but manager Manuel Pellegrini is confident his side will bounce back and keep the pressure on Chelsea.
On Saturday fourth-place Manchester United will be hoping to take care of business at Old Trafford against Sunderland after losing 2-1 to Swansea City in the last fixture. They can move to third with a victory, as third-place Arsenal doesn’t kick-off until Sunday.
Louis van Gaal’s Red Devils have not been playing well this season, despite the number of talents in the squad and another defeat on Sunday could open the doors for the likes of Southampton and Liverpool to move above them in the race for a Champions League slot.
Arsenal play Everton at Emirates Stadium on Sunday with a top four finish all in their heads, while Southampton travel to The Hawthorns to take on West Bromwich.
In the battle for survival, relegation threatened Aston Villa take on Newcastle United at St. James’ Park seeking three points that would lift them out of that “red zone.”
Burnley play host to Swansea at Turf Moor hoping to leave the bottom three as well, while West Ham take on Crystal Palace at Boleyn Ground hoping to move back into the Europe football places.
