The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 scores and results on Day 3 with Lionel Messi and Argentina getting stunned by Saudi Arabia while defending world champion France cruised past Australia in their group opener on Tuesday.
Argentina entered this World Cup as one of the pre-tournament favorites and the script was going according to plan when Messi slotted home a 10th-minute penalty kick to give the South Americans the lead as they dominated the opening minutes in the Group C matchup.
However, La Albiceleste conceded two goals in the space of five minutes, first in the 48th and then in 53 –when Saleh Al Shehri leveled the score with a low effort and Salem Al Dawsari fired home the go-ahead goal to spark pandemonium in the stands. Saudi Arabia then held on at the end to score the biggest upset in World Cup history, while Argentina saw their 36-game unbeaten run come to an end at the wrong time.
Meanwhile, reigning World Cup champion France overcame the injury crisis in the buildup to the tournament to outclass Australia 4-1.
The Aussies took a shock lead when Craig Goodwin netted for the Socceroos early with a powerful far-post finish after nine minutes. But France responded the way we thought they would as Olivier Giroud, who equaled Thierry Henry’s all-time scoring record for the national team, scored twice, and Kylian Mbappe and Adrien Rabiot all scored to seal the win.
The other two games today ended in respective 0-0 ties.
In Group C, Robert Lewandowski had a penalty saved as Poland and Mexico played out a very lively goalless draw, while in Group D Denmark and Tunisia also ended without scoring.
