Dempsey continues to lead the forward line in absence of the injured Jozy Altidore, who misses the game with a hamstring strain that had forced him out of the Portugal draw as well.

Alejandro Bedoya makes way for Brad Davis in a five man midfield, with Michael Bradley, Jermaine Jones, Kyle Beckerman and Graham Zusi also starting as well.

Omar Gonzalez comes into the team and plays along with Fabian Johnson and DaMarcus Beasley in the back line, as Geoff Cameron is back on the bench.

For Germany, Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski starts his first game of the World Cup, with Mario Götze making way.

Bastian Schweinsteiger also starts with Sami Khedira on the bench, but Miroslav Klose, who needs just one goal to break the World Cup scoring record continues to start on the bench with Thomas Müller heading up the line.
