His MLS club revealed the news via its Twitter account on Wednesday night after a scan, and his recovery time is expected to be three weeks.
The experience midfielder was only recently drafted into the squad for Bayern Munich midfielder Douglas Costa, and played the last 10 minutes of Brazil’s 2-0 win over Panama on Sunday.
The 34-year-old was looking forward to playing in this year’s tournament, but will now have to watch the action from the sidelines.
Kaka will be replaced in the squad by Paulo Henrique Ganso, according to a statement by Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).
“[Ganso] will replace Kaka, who suffered a muscle injury that was revealed in a scan – his recovery time is estimated at 20 days,” the CBF statement read.
The 2016 Copa America competition kicks off on Friday, while Brazil will open their campaign at the tournament against Ecuador on Saturday.
The South American giants will also take on Peru and Haiti in the group stage of the tournament.
