Jets, Falcons Fire Coaches; Jim Heading To Michigan?

SportingAlert Live Highlights

NEW YORK (Sporting Alert) -- The New York Jets have fired coach Rex Ryan and GM John Idzik on Monday after the team failed to make the playoffs for a fourth straight year.

The Jets ended the disastrous season with a 37-24 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, but finished the term with a 4-12 over record -- the worst for the club since 2007 and one which didn't satisfy owner Woody Johnson.

"After extensive thought and reflection about the current state of our football team, this morning I informed Rex Ryan and John Idzik that they will not be returning for the 2015 season," Johnson said in a statement release.

"Both Rex and John made significant contributions to the team, and they have my appreciation and gratitude for their efforts and commitment.

"Over the years, Rex brought the Jets a bold confidence and a couple of great post-season runs, which all of us will remember," Johnson said in a statement.

"I am beginning our search for new football leadership, effective immediately, with guidance and support from respected football experts, including Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf, two Super Bowl winners with decades of valuable experience.

"We will consider all options to improve the Jets. Getting the Jets back on track is my top priority, and today's decisions are important steps towards achieving our goals."

The Jets, who never won successive games this season and had an eight game losing streak from Sep. 14 to Nov. 2, finished fourth from bottom in the AFC with a win percentage of .250.

Ryan's team won just two game at home this campaign and finished at the bottom at 32nd in passing yards per game (184.1).

Elsewhere on Monday, the Atlanta Falcons fired head coach Mike Smith after the team missed the playoff in back-to-back seasons.

Smith had a 66-46 winning record in his seven seasons in charge.

Meanwhile, Chicago Bears have reportedly sacked GM Phil Emery after the team missed the playoffs in his three-years in charge.

Head coach Marc Trestman, who had a 13-19 record in two seasons, is also expected to be fired.

It is also being understood that outgoing San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh will be introduced as the new head coach at Michigan this week.
