WORCESTER, Mass. — Daman Tate had 26 points and 10 rebounds from a reserved role while wearing a mask, and Boston University defeated Holy Cross 83-76 in a season opener for both teams on Monday. Box Score

Tate, who shot 9 of 10 from the field and connected on 4 for 5 from 3-pointers, also collected four steals in his performance off the bench.Boston University players were required to wear masks while on the court to try and combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Although Holy Cross players did not wear mask in this game, they will be required to do so when these teams meet in a rematch on Tuesday since it’s on Boston University’s campus.

Another reserve, Javante McCoy added 17 points on 7 of 13 shooting to go with six rebounds, three assists and two blocks, while Jack Hemphill finished with 12 points on 5 of 10 shooting to go with five rebounds for the Terriers (1-0, 1-0 Patriot League), collected 57 points from the bench.

Sukhmail Mathon was the only starter to score in double figures for Boston University – finishing with 10 (4 of 5) and seven rebounds.

Austin Butler had 24 points and shot 11 of 18 from the field for Holy Cross. He also had eight eight rebounds and four steals.

Gerrale Gates added 19 points and eight rebounds and Matt Faw ended with 13 points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks for the Crusaders (0-1, 0-1).

Boston University shot 54.2% from the field on 32 of 59 shots and outrebounded Holy Cross 36-29. 

The Crusaders were 46.3% shooting from the floor on 31 of 67.
