With midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger ruled out of the game with the knee problem he sustained in Saturday’s FA Cup 1-0 win over Sheffield United, manager Louis van Gaal had to make changes in his midfield.

So, the report from the team sheet reads that the Dutchman has made three changes to tonight’s lineup with Ashley Young, Morgan Schneiderlin and Jesse Lingard all starting this game.

They come in for Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Juan Mata, while Marouane Fellaini keeps his place in the starting lineup.

He will play alongside Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera and Jessie Lingard, with Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney among the attackers to start.

Mata is on the bench, alongside Memphis Depay, Andreas Pereira and James Weir.

For Newcastle United, Fabricio Coloccini is fit enough to start and Jack Colback is back in the starting line-up after recovering from a hamstring problem.

Manchester United remain without the likes of defenders Luke Shaw (leg) and Marcos Rojo (shoulder) and midfielder Antonio Valencia (foot).

Defender Phil Jones is also out because of an ankle problem.

The Red Devils have scored just 24 goals this season in the English Premier League, which is the fewest of the teams that are currently in the top six in the table standings.

Many experts believe a poor result for Manchester United this evening would add further pressure on Van Gaal, although he is confident his position at Old Trafford is safe.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper David De Gea is set to make his 200th appearance tonight for the Red Devils.

De Gea has been the club’s best player this season and has helped his team on many occasions.

Manchester United: De Gea; Young, Smalling, Blind, Darmian; Schneiderlin, Fellaini; Lingard, Herrera, Martial; Rooney. Subs: Romero, Borthwick-Jackson, McNair, Weir, Pereira, Mata, Memphis.

Newcastle United: Elliot, Janmaat, Mbemba, Coloccini, Dummett, Sissoko, Tiote, Colback, Wijnaldum, Perez, Mitrovic. Subs: Darlow, Sterry, Lascelles, Gouffran, Marveaux, De Jong, Toney.
