TEXAS, Sporting Alert – NFL preseason 2015 scores and results from the list of games that took place in Week 1 on Friday, 14 August.

Among the teams picking up wins in this week’s preseason action were the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

At the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, rookie Marcus Mariota recovered from a shaky start in which he threw an interception on his first possession that almost returned for a touchdown, although the Tennessee Titans went down 31-22 to the Falcons.

The former Oregon Ducks NCAA star quarterback ended the game with 7-of-8 passes for 94 yards, with two turnovers.

Meanwhile, Zach Mettenberger finished with 8 of 11 for 129 and a touchdown, but he too also had an interception in the defeat for the Titans.

“We obviously had a tough start,” said Tennessee coach Ken Whisenhunt. “We can’t turn the ball over. … It was disappointing, but I like the way they responded.”

At the other end, Atlanta’s quarterback Matt Ryan completed all six pass attempts for 86 yards and no interception, while throwing to Julio Jones for a score in the win.

Alongside him, Sean Renfree finished with 6 of 7 passes for 68 yards in the win, with Jones ending the game with four catches for 61 yards.

In the NFL preseason game at Ralph Wilson Stadium in New York, third-choice quarterback Joe Webb rallied the Carolina Panthers to a last-minute victory over Buffalo in what was Rex Ryan’s debut game as the Bills coach.

Webb ended the night with 8 of 15 passes, including a 42-yard pass to Brandon Wegher with 52 seconds left in the battle. He then found Paul Browning for a 2-point conversion to seal the narrow 25-24 victory.

Panthers starting quarterback Cam Newton went 5 of 10 for 83 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown pass to Kelvin Benjamin on his limited night, while Derek Anderson finished with 7 of 12 for 83 yards and found Brenton Bersin with a 12 yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

Elsewhere on the night, the Denver Broncos, playing without starter Peyton Manning, help on for a 22-20 preseason win over the Seattle Seahawks at CenturyLink Field.

Manning went through his pregame warmups, but didn’t feature, as his replacement Brock Osweiler enjoyed a very productive first half in which he was 15 of 20 for 151 yards and a touchdown.

“Things felt very smooth out there tonight,” said Osweiler, who helped the Broncos to score on all five first-half possessions on Friday night.

“So from a personal standpoint it probably is my best performance to date, but I can’t say that without those 10 other guys I was out there with tonight.”
