LANDOVER, Md. Sporting Alert – The Buffalo Bills and Washington Redskins opened the NFL Week 2 Preseason fixtures with respective wins on Thursday night.
Buffalo secured a late 11-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns, while Washington picked up a 21-17 win over the Detroit Lions.
At FedEx Field in Landover, the Redskins suffered a major setback in its preparation, despite scoring a positive result to go 2-0 in preseason.
Griffin III Hit Into Concussion
Quarterback Robert Griffin III, who is hoping to finally have a standout season since joining the league, was again placed on the sidelines after he left Thursday’s Week 2 preseason game in the second quarter with a concussion, head coach Jay Gruden confirmed.
Griffin III went 2-of-5 for 8 yards, sacked three times and fumbled twice on four possessions before he was forced out of the contest, after the Detroit Lions defensive end Corey Wootton landed on him during his attempt to recover a loose ball which he let slipped despite being under no pressure.
No date has been set for his return, but Gruden revealed that the 25-year-old will continue to be the starter.
“We’ll have to wait and see,” he told reporters. “I would imagine, depending on how long he is out, he is still going to be our starter.
“We have to wait and go through the whole process and see how he recovers, see how fast he recovers. I have no idea as far as third preseason game, fourth one, right now.”
Griffin III apparently hurt his right shoulder in the struggle as well, but Gruden said that problem will be OK.
Impressive Again From Matt Jones
Stepping away from Griffin III concerns, the Redskins (2-0) had another impressive performance from rookie running back Matt Jones, who gained 44 yards on eight carries and a touchdown.
He’s now tallied a combined 82 yards on 13 carries so far in his two NFL preseason games.
Another running back rookie, Trey Williams, rushed 10 times for 52 yards, with his longest on the nigh being 38 yards.
At the quarterback position, Kirk Cousins was 8-of-12 for 91 yards and one touchdown, with Colt McCoy going 5-of-6 for 80 yards and a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Dan Orlovsky went 13-of-17 for 118 yards and threw touchdown passes to Jeremy Ross and Zach Zenner, who also caught five passes for 59 yards and ran four times for 22 yards in the defeat for the Lions (1-1).
More Scores and Reports
In the other game played NFL Week 2 preseason game on Thursday night, the Buffalo Bills (1-1) grabbed a late victory over the Cleveland Browns, following a late touchdown and a two-point conversion play, which were set up by EJ Manuel.
Down 3-10 heading into the closing stages of the fourth quarter, Manuel found Andre Davis from four yards for a score, before passing to Bronson Hill for a two-point conversion, with the Bills opting not to go for the tie and draw the preseason game out into overtime.
In the defeat for Cleveland (0-2), quarterback Johnny Manziel was 10-of-18 for 118 and a touchdown.
The NFL Week 2 preseason fixtures will continue on Friday night with two more games.
