The 26 year old suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury during last Saturday’s draw with leaders Burnley and has been ruled out for the rest of the season.
Cohen now joins the likes of Kelvin Wilson and Danny Collins on the long-term injury list.
Forest manager Billy Davies will check on the fitness of Andy Reid, David Vaughan and Greg Halford to see if they will be fit enough to feature for the home side.
The Reds were successful in taking four points off fellow contenders, Leicester City and Burnley in recent weeks and Davies excited about facing Reading in such good form.
“We’ve had a nice week. The players and staff have been bright and the club has had a nice feel about it,” he said.
“We have produced two great performances recently and hopefully we can do the same against Reading.”
Meanwhile, Reading manager Nigel Adkins will be hoping to have attacker Hal Robson-Kanu back for today’s clash after he missed the game against Blackburn last weekend due to illness.
Sean Morrison, Wayne Bridge (both knee), Jem Karacan (cruciate) and Mikele Leigertwood (ankle) and experienced forward Jason Roberts (hip) are all sidelined.
