Olympic Games Women’s Soccer Day 1 Results: Aug. 3

Olympic Games scores and results from the opening games of women’s soccer on Day 1. Brazil, USA, Germany and France all picked up victories.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, Sporting Alert — Results from the women’s games that took place on Day 1 at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio on Wednesday.

Top medal prospects, USA, the three-time defending champion, Germany, France and host country Brazil, all opened their Olympic campaigns with impressive victories in their respective groups.

Most impressive on the opening day of competition was Germany, which battered Zimbabwe 6-1 after collecting four goals in the second half.

Midfielder Melanie Behringer netted a second-half brace to help setup the exciting win, with Sara Daebritz, Alexandra Popp, Melanie Leupolz and a late own goal by Eunice Chibanda completing the scoring.

Kudakwashe Basopo scored the lone goal for Zimbabwe when she made it 2-1 in the 53rd minute.

Hosts Brazil thrashed China 3-0 in their Group E opener to thrill the home supporters at the Olympic Stadium.

Monica gave the Brazilians the lead in the 36th minute, before Andressa Alves and Cristiane finished off the job in the second half.

The host country dominated China in the shot column, 21-4, with 10 of those being on target, while finishing with 64-percent of the ball.

Defending champion USA started its hunt for a historic fourth successive Olympic Games gold medal with a 2-0 victory over New Zealand in Group G.

Seasoned performers, captain Carli Lloyd and Alex Morgan scored the goals for the Americans, who are looking to become the first country to win the world cup and Olympic titles in consecutive years.

Another medal prospect, France, also got off to a the winning start, following a 4-0 victory over Colombia in Group G.

An early own goal from Carolina Arias gave the French side a second-minute advantage before Eugenie Sommer added a second in the 14th minute and Camille Abily grabbed a third goal three-minutes before the half time whistle.

Amel Majri scored France’s fourth goal in the 82 minute to wrap up the victory and move above the USA on goal-difference in the group.

Also picking up wins on the first day at Rio 2016 were Canada, which tagged Australia 2-0 in Group F, with Janine Beckie scoring the fastest goal in Olympic Games history, while Sweden edged South Africa 1-0 in Group E on a goalkeeper own goal error.
