Des Moines, IA (Sporting Alert) — Galen Rupp broke free from a three man group and then widen the gap on his way to winning the men’s 10,000m at the U.S. Track and Field Trials on Thursday night.
Rupp, the 2012 Olympic Games silver medalist from London, timed his kick well to perfection to stride away from the travelling Dathan Ritzenhein, who led the contest leading up to the final quarter-mile and Chris Derrick with 250m left in the race.
The Alberto Salazar coached long distance star posted a winning time of 28:47.32 – shutting down in the last 100m to finish some 20-metres clear of second placed Ritzenhein, who ran 28:49.66.
Derrick was third in 28:52.25, as the top three were the only runners below the 29-minute barrier.
The women’s 10,000m race was won by world-leader Shalane Flanagan with a time of 31:43.20 and she defeated Jordan Hasay, who clocked 32:17.34 and Tara Erdmann (32:24.16).
