OLD TRAFFORD, Sporting Alert – Bastian Schweinsteiger was a surprise figure at Carrington on Monday, as the German midfielder trained with the Manchester United first team squad, Sky Sports reported.
Schweinsteiger, who has not featured for Manchester United all season, was training with the senior team for the first time this season under manager Jose Mourinho.
The former Bayern Munich star midfielder was told by Mourinho that he had no future at Old Trafford and has been training with the club’s U21s and on his own, so it was a shocking sign to see him practicing with the main squad on Monday.
Manchester United are preparing for their Europa League group match against Fenerbahce in Istanbul on Thursday.
Schweinsteiger was not included in the 27-man squad for the Europa League.
Last month Bayern Munich goalkeeper and German international Manuel Neuer offered his backing to his fellow countryman and close friend.
“I really hope that Bastian gets some consideration soon,” Neuer said. “We all know he’s one of the best midfielder in the world.
“He belongs on the field for Manchester United and not training individually.”
Also joining the first team training set up at the Aon Training Complex on Monday morning was midfielder Henrik Mkhitaryan, who had been training on his own.
Mkhitaryan could feature for United against Fenerbahce, while captain Wayne Rooney could start the game.
In other Manchester United team news on Monday, forward Anthony Martial is back in training after the Frenchman suffered a foot injury.
His last appearance for Manchester United was in the 4-0 defeat in the English Premier League at Chelsea.
Defender Phil Jones was also pictured training with the first-team squad after recovering from an injury.
Jones is yet to make an appearance this season because of injuries.
Teenage striker Marcus Rashford celebrated his 19th birthday today and the England international is looking forward to spending some time with his family later in the day.
