[VIDEO] Should Cavani Start Over Martial Now For Manchester United?

By:Marcus-Bloxam Football Contributor Published on: November 30, 2020 9:54 pm Leave a Comment

MANCHESTER — – After coming off the bench to score twice, including the game winner against Southampton in the English Premier League on Sunday, ESPN FC discussed whether or not Edinson Cavani should now become the main striker for Manchester United.

Cavani was injected into the game to start the second half at St. Mary’s after manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Mason Greenwood with the former Paris Saint-Germain forward.

The Uruguay international who linked up with the Red Devils late after making a last minute move to Old Trafford on transfer deadline day, showed that he’s finally rounding into better match shape by scoring a brace and providing an assists in the win.

With Manchester United trailing 2-0 at halftime, Cavani found Bruno Fernandes for the visitors first goal and then scored two headers to earn a 3-2 victory over the Saints.

With Anthony Martial struggling to replicate his scoring form a season ago, ESPN FC Extra Time discussed if super-sub Cavani should now become a starter over the Frenchman.

However, Gab Marcotti, ESPN transfer expert Gabriele Marcotti and senior writer, who urged Manchester United to make a move for Cavani, doesn’t believe the 33-year-old can play every week.

“I don’t think you can get Cavani week in and week out,” Marcotti said.

When pushed to explain his reason, Marcotti continued, “because the man is 33-years-old and coming off a long layoff and you’re playing a ton of games.”

He expects to see Solskjaer alternating in that position a lot to get the best out of Cavani, Martial and Greenwood.

“Martial is a much better counter-attacker,” Marcotti added. “He’s a natural counter-attacker and he’s obviously more durable than Cavani, but in certain games, you’re happy to have Cavani off the bench no question about it.”

How To Watch Manchester United v PSG ICC Game

By:Marcus-Bloxam Football Contributor Published on: July 29, 2015 11:19 pm Leave a Comment

CHICAGO, Sporting Alert – Manchester United will close out their preseason tour of the United States with their fourth game in the International Champions Cup against Paris Saint-Germain at Soldier Field in Chicago on Wednesday night.

Manchester United v PSG: Wednesday, 29 July at 8:05 p.m. CDT
How To Watch Live: Fox Sports 1 USA, ESPN Deportes, MUTV, Fox Sports Go

The Red Devils, who have already beaten Club America, San Jose Earthquakes and Barcelona, will retain the ICC preseason title with a win over the French champions and manager Louis van Gaal will field another competitive lineup, although he’ll continue to feature his youths.

One of the players set to start is Bastian Schweinsteiger, who missed Manchester United’s 3-1 victory over Barcelona on Saturday because of a minor injury.

Schweinsteiger had featured in the 1-0 victory over Club American and the 3-1 win against the Earthquakes in the second game of the tour.

However, the German World Cup winner picked up a slight injury in training before the Barca clash and was held out.

Striker Javier Hernandez linked back up with his teammates in Santa Clara on Saturday and was among those cheering for the English Premier League outfits during the victory over Barcelona.

The Mexican, who missed the CONCACAF Gold Cup because of a shoulder injury, is back training and van Gaal could give him a few minutes on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Zlatan Ibrahimovic will lead PSG in the contest and they will be hoping to end the North America leg of the preseason tournament on a winning note.

The French powerhouses are coming off a 6-5 penalty kick defeat against Chelsea, after the two clubs ended 1-1 in regular time.

Ibrahimovic was again on target for PSG.

Besides the Sweden star, PSG will also feature the likes of Lucas Moura, who was once linked with a move to Old Trafford, Edinson Cavani, currently being back to join van Gaal’s side, as well as Jean-Kevin Augustin, David Luiz, Lucas Digne, Thiago Motta, Thiago Silva and Maxwell.

Prior to the shootout defeat to Chelsea in the last game, PSG had picked up wins over SL Benfica (3-2) and Fiorentina (4-2).

Interestingly, Wednesday night’s game will take place in the middle of an ongoing saga involving Manchester United midfielder Angel Di Maria, who has been heavily linked with a move to Paris to play with the French champions next season.

Di Maria was supposed to join up with the rest of his teammates on Saturday after the Barcelona game, but the Argentine international never showed up.

It was later revealed the former Real Madrid playmaker never got on the plane – with several reports claiming he missed his flight to the United States.

At Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte, Neymar and company get things started, as a massive crowd will be at hand to watch Brazil and Chile take part in the first round of last 16 World Cup match.

Both teams have key players nursing small niggles, but they are all expected to available for the contest.

Defender David Luiz has a slight back problem, while Hulk is still nursing a muscle injury in his left leg.

For Chile, they will be hoping that defender Gary Medel can recover from his ankle problem, while Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal is set to return to the starting lineup after he was rested for the final group match against the Netherlands.

Chile played to an exciting 2-2 draw with Brazil at this venue last year and are confident of shocking the pre-World Cup favourites. At the sametime, though, Brazil head into the fixture knowing that they have won all three previous World Cup fixtures against Chile. The Canarinha picked up victories in the knockout stages of the tournament in 2010, 1998 and 1962, while Chile are yet to win in 26 visits to Brazil, including 20 defeats.

Colombia v Uruguay

The second last 16 World Cup game on Saturday sees a very exciting Colombian team taking on a Uruguay side that will be without top forward Luis Suarez for the clash in Rio de Janeiro.

After making some eight changes for their final group stage match in the win over Japan, Colombia will restore its top players against Uruguay. James Rodriguez, Juan Cuardrado and Teofilo Gutierrez all set to start, with Jackson Martinez, who netted twice against Japan expected to play some part in the game as well.

Uruguay are without banned forward Suarez, so veteran Diego Forlan will likely link up with Edinson Cavani in the attack.

There were suggestions that Óscar Tabárez could use Cavani as the lone forward, but the coach says he wants to use another player to stretch the Colombia back line, seeing that Cavani drops deep most of the time and leaves spaces for others to run into.

Skipper Diego Lugano is still being bothered by a knee injury and could be forced out of this game again for Uruguay.

Eto’o starts; Chelsea v PSG Champions League Live

By:JAMES ANDERSON Published on: April 8, 2014 1:34 pm Leave a Comment

LONDON (Sporting Alert) — Samuel Eto’o is a surprised starter for Chelsea in tonight’s crucial Champions League quarter-final second tie with Paris St Germain at Stamford Bridge.

Place: Stamford Bridge

Eto’o, who was doubtful for the game after picking up a hamstring injury which forced him to missed the last three games, including the first leg 3-1 defeat in Paris, will lead the attack after recovering from the injury.

He comes into the Chelsea starting line-up in place of Andre Schurrle, who is on the bench along with Fernando Torres and Demba Ba.

England midfielder Frank Lampard replaces the suspended Ramires, while there are starts as well for David Luiz, who will play alongside Lampard, with Willian, Oscar and Eden Hazard supporting Eto’o.

PSG will be missing Sweden forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who misses the game with a hamstring injury.

This means Edinson Cavani will come off the wing and play a more center forward role, while Lucas Moura comes in for Ibrahimovic.

Eto’o could be on the bench: Chelsea v PSG Champions League quarter-final 2nd leg TV Channels

By:JAMES ANDERSON Published on: April 8, 2014 7:40 am Leave a Comment

LONDON (Sporting Alert) — Jose Mourinho is set to start with Fernando Torres in his attack, while Samuel Eto’o could be on the bench for Chelsea’s Champions League quarter-final second leg clash with the visiting Paris St Germain.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUARTER-FINAL SECOND LEG
Place: Stamford Bridge
Date: Tuesday, 8 April
Kick-off: 19:45 BST
TV Channels Live Streaming Coverage: FoxSoccer2Go.com, SiriusXM FC, BBC Radio 5 live, Fox Sports 1 USA, TEN Sports India, beIN Sports Arabia, UTV, TV3 Ireland, TEN Sports LIVE, UTV, STV Scotland, ITV 1, SuperSport Africa

Torres and the rest of his striking-mates have been heavily criticized this season by Mourinho, who believes his forwards have let him down thus far in this campaign.

However, with Chelsea needing to overturn a 3-1 deficit after losing the first-leg tie in Paris, Mourinho is ready to try with Torres in the attack again, hoping this time he can find some form in front of the net.

Eto’o has been recovering from his hamstring problem and Mourinho is not ruling out using the Cameroon international at some point during the game.

Coming back from a two-goal deficit will not be easy against PSG, but Mourinho says they are all believers.

“I believe and my players believe and that’s the most important thing,” the Chelsea boss said.

“If Paris are knocked out (Tuesday) it will be a big disappointment for them; if we are knocked out then it is something that a lot of people are expecting.

“We have to enjoy the risk of the situation. At 9.30pm [UK time] we can be out, and we know that. But at 7.45pm we have chances to be in the semi-final. So at 7.45pm we have to be ready, with smiles on our faces, to go out and see what happens – but at 7.45pm we believe we can do it.”

In other Chelsea news, Brazilian midfielder Ramires is suspended and will not feature, while Nemanja Matic and Mohamed Salah are both cup-tied and are ineligible. Marco van Ginkel could be on the bench.

For PGS, in the meantime, leading striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss the game because of a hamstring injury sustained in the first leg at the Parc des Princes last week.

This means that Edinson Cavani will now play through the middle as the center forward and he could very cause the same kind of problems as Ibrahimovic.
