UCLA 40, NO. CALIFORNIA 24
PASADENA, Calif. — Josh Rosen passed for 399 yards and three touchdowns to help UCLA rout No. 20 California 40-24 in college football Week 8 action on Thursday night.
The freshman from Manhattan Beach, Calif., completed a school-record 34 passes from 47 attempts, while finding senior wide receiver Devin Fuller on two of his three touchdown passes in the win.
Thursday night’s victory also saw the Bruins (5-2, 2-2 Pac-12) rebounding from back-to-back defeats and avoided their first three-game conference losing streak under coach Jim Mora.
Fuller took seven catches for 100 yards and his TDs, while Thomas Duarte caught the ball 10 times for 141 yards and a touchdown.
Soso Jamabo ran for 79 yards and a score, and Ka’imi Fairbairn scored all four of his field goals, including a school-record successive attempt from 60 yards
Jared Goff threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns for California, which was suffering its second straight defeat.
Goff threw touchdown passes to Darius Powe, Kenny Lawler and Khalfani Muhammad, who also ran for 55 yards to go with 46 receiving yards for the Bears (5-2, 2-2).
“I’m proud of our guys who have been battling adversity. We lost our top runner and our starting right tackle,” Mora said. “Our starting offensive line was great.
“Defensively, we played well. The key was getting that quarterback [Jared Goff] on the ground. He is a great player. In the second half, we got him on the ground.”
He added about Rosen: “Josh is a lot like the kid that we were playing against. He’s very mature, he has tremendous poise, he prepares well, and he’s smart.
“He trusts the guys around him. He trusts his receivers. Like all great performers, they are able to let go of what just happened and move on to the next event.
“Josh has been able to do that now for seven games, in spring ball and in our summer camp. He’s a rare kid, just like Goff. They’re both very good quarterbacks.”
UCLA top running back Paul Perkins, who rushed for 73 yards in the game, left Thursday night’s win because of an injury.
