NEW YORK, Sporting Alert – Scores and results from men’s and women’s singles play on day 1 at the 2016 US Open Tennis Tournament on Monday in New York.

Among those scoring wins on Monday’s were, men’s world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia and No. 4 Rafa Nadal of Spain, as well as No. 2 Angelique Kerber of Germany, No. 7 Roberta Vinci of Italy and No. 14 Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic who advanced in the women’s singles Round 1.

Defending champion Djokovic started the defence of his US Open crown with a hard fought 6-3 5-7 6-2 6-1 win over Jerzy Janowicz of Poland on Monday, but his outing left many with lingering concerns about the Serbian’s fitness.

Also in men’s singles action, former champions Marin Cilic and Nadal both picked up wins in round one.

Spain’s Nadal skipped by Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-1 6-4 6-2 in his first round game to setup a second round clash with Italy’s Andreas Seppi, who beat Stephane Robert of France 6-2 3-6 6-4 6-3.

Meanwhile, Cilic got his US Open campaign off to a solid start, following his 6-4 7-5 6-1 victory over Rogerio Dutra Silva of Brazil in the morning session at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

The No. 7 seeded Croatian, who enters this year’s final grand slam in good form after seeing off world number two Andy Murray in the Cincinnati final last week, endured some early bumps before putting away Silva.

“It’s my second home, I feel great here,” said Cilic, who won this title two-years-ago. “My best memories come from here in 2014.

“Winning Cincinnati just shows me I am in good form but it’s an extremely tough tournament, over two weeks. There are a lot of contenders for the title so I will take it step by step.”

Cilic, who finished with 12 aces, will now play Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine in round two after he down Gastao Elias of Portugal 6-1 3-6 2-6 6-3 7-6(4).

In other men’s singles early results, 13th seed Richard Gasquet of France and Slovakia’s No. 28 seed Martin Klizan were both eliminated from the US Open tournament in round 1.

Gasquet was stunned in straight sets, 6-2 6-2 6-3 by Kyle Edmund of Great Britain, who was claiming the biggest win of his career thus far.

Meanwhile, Klizan was ousted 6-2 6-1 6-1 by Mikhail Youzhny of Russia.

Kerber advanced to the second round on Monday after the contest between her and Polona Hercog ended prematurely, as the Slovenian player was forced to retire from the competition.

At the time, Hercog was trailing Kerber 6-0 1-0 at Arthur Ashe Stadium

Last year’s runner-up Vinci eased to a comfortable 6-2 6-4 victory over Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany to move into the second round of the competition.

No. 14 seed Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic beat Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, 7-5 6-3 to secure her place into the second round of the tournament.

Kvitova was a quarterfinalist at the 2015 US Open tournament.

No. 3 Garbine Muguruza Blanco of Spain came from a set down to defeat Elise Mertens of Belgium 2-6 6-0 6-3.
