Stoke unluckily went behind in the fifth-minute when Ryan Shawcross deflected home past his goalkeeper for the own goal, before Suarez took advantage of some sloppy play at the back to fire past Jack Butland to make it 2-0 in the 32nd minute.

However, the home side rallied late in the first half to score two goals, through Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam and the teams went into the break at 2-2.

But six minutes into the second half Stoke City gave away a needless penalty and Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard made no mistake from the spot.

Daniel Sturridge, back from an ankle injury, entered the game as a substitute for Philippe Coutinho shortly after the hour mark and he combined with Suarez for Liverpool’s fourth goal, which was scored by the Uruguay international.

Jon Walters pulled a goal back for Stoke in the 85th minute, but Sturridge grabbed the fifth for the Reds to secure the three points.
