(Sporting Alert) — Edinson Cavani scored a second half winner and Uruguay beat Argentina 3-2 in their final round FIFA World Cup CONMEBOL qualifiers on Tuesday night, but will have to play in the playoffs to earn a spot to Brazil.
Chile defeated Ecuador 2-1 and ten-man Colombia registered a similar result of Paraguay on the road, also in CONMEBOL qualifiers.
With Argentina already qualified the pressure was off and head coach Alejandro Sabella used the opportunity to give other players the chance to shine, with the likes of Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero amongst the regular missing.
But it was Uruguay, who took the lead through Cristian Rodriguez when he fired home from inside the box in the seventh minute.
Maxi Rodriguez equalised from close range in the 15th minute, but that goal then saw Liverpool forward Luis Suarez giving the hosts the lead from the penalty spot in the 34th minute.
And it was Rodriguez again who found the leveler for Argentina, three-minutes before the half time break as the teams shared four goals in 45-minutes.
In the end though Uruguay sealed the win early in the second half when PSG forward Cavani fired home, following a pass from Suarez in the 49th minute.
Uruguay will not face Jordan in a two-way playoff game for a place at the World .
In other results in CONMEBOL World Argentina in the group standings, edged Paraguay 2-1.qualifier, Chile beat Ecuador 2-1 with Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez on target, but both teams qualified after making the top four, while Colombia, who had already booked their spot after finishing second behind
The late game on the night saw Peru and Bolivia ending 1-1.
