Villanova No. 1 Again; Baylor, Duke Fall in AP Top 25: Jan. 16

Villanova unexpectedly returned the top of The Associated Press college basketball Top 25 rankings in Week 11 on Jan. 16. Baylor and Duke both fell with losses. The Pundits had picked Kansas to take over the top ranked position, but the Jayhawks stayed firm at No. 2.

MIAMI, FL – Villanova is back at No. 1 in Week 11 of the AP College Basketball Top 25 rankings, release on Monday, Jan. 16.

The Wildcats (17-1), was recently replaced by Baylor at the top and slipped to third in the poll, but the Bears suffered a heavy defeat to West Virginia last week and dropped in this week’s rankings.

Villanova collected 28 first-place votes from the 65 member national media panel for 1,580 points.

The defending champions held opponents to less than 60 points last week in a pair of victories against Xavier and St John’s.

Next on the schedule is a matchup with Seton Hall on Monday and then Providence five days later.

Kansas was the pundits’ pick for the No. 1 spot in Week 11, but the Jayhawks (16-1), who are on a 16-game win streak, stayed solid at No. 2, despite receiving 32 of the first-place votes from the media panel.

The Big 12 champions beat Oklahoma and Oklahoma State at home last week.

Meanwhile, UCLA (18-1) collected three first-place votes to improved one place to No. 3 this week, while Gonzaga, which got the other two votes for first place, and remains the other undefeated team left in Division I basketball, is up one slot to No. 4 after improving to 17-0 this season.

Kentucky (15-2) moves up one spot to No. 5.

Baylor, which lost its first game of the season at West Virginia before beating Kansas State. dropped five places to No. 6 this week.

The Mountaineers, Creighton, North Carolina and Florida State rounded out the Top 10.

Next is Oregon at No. 11, Louisville is No. 12, Butler comes in at 13th, while Arizona is 14th and Notre Dame climbed five spots to No. 20.

The Duke Blue Devils slipped 11 places this week to No. 18, following defeats to Florida State and Louisville last week, while Virginia (16), Wisconsin (17), Florida (19) and Cincinnati (20) completed the Top 20.

Purdue, Xavier, Saint Mary’s, South Carolina and Maryland make up the last five teams in the latest AP Top 25 rankings.

Minnesota (24), Kansas State (25) and USC (25) were the teams falling from the rankings this week.
