KINGSTON, Jamaica, Sporting Alert – The 40th staging of the Gibson McCook Relays is set to take place at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica on Saturday.

The event is the biggest relay carnival in the country and track and field supporters from all around the world will be tuned in to see some of the islands’ rising stars showcase their talents in a preview of what is to come later this season.

Competition gets underway at 9:00 am with the qualifying rounds of the high school boys 4x400m relays before things heat up with several other events later on in the day.

Besides the 4x400m relays, action in the 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x800m and the sprint medley, will also be contested.

Traditional schools, such as Calabar, Jamaica College, Wolmer’s and Kingston College, are expected to provide the main highlights on the boys’ side.

In the female category, expect to see the likes of St. Jago, Edwin Allen, Holmwood Tech, Hydel High and Vere Tech to battle things out.

There are also be several individual events listed on the schedule, including the men’s and women’s 100m and 400m races, long and high jump open for women, the mile run for male and female, as well as the open pole vault for men.

On the club side of things, Racers Track Club, MVP, Sprint Tech, UTECH and Cameron Blazers will be on show.

We do not anticipate seeing the likes of Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Yohan Blake and Asafa Powell at this year’s event, but you never know what kind of surprises the organisers have in store for us this weekend.
