Competition starts with the running of the college women’s 400m hurdles championship at 10:00 AM ET, which will be followed by the high school girls’ race in the same category.
The heats of the high school girls’ 4×800, 4×100 and 4×400 relays, as well as the college women’s 4×100 preliminaries are also set for the morning session on the first full day of competition.
On the track, there will be two finals in the evening session – the college women and high school girls’ Distance Medley Championship of America Invitational at 5:40 PM and 6:20 PM, respectively.
In the college women’s race, defending champion Villanova, winners of four consecutive golds in the event, will be looking to add to their run away collection of 14 total wins in the women’s DMR a Penn Relays.
The Gina Procaccio coached team have won five of the last 10 titles on offer for this event and the veteran coach said after last year’s victory that they never get tired of standing on the top of the podium.
“You never get tired of winning,” Procaccio said in an interview after last year’s fourth successive victory.
She added: “This is our turf and they ran like true Villanovans.”
One of their biggest challengers for the title this year will be Oklahoma State which is coached by Dave Smith.
During the evening session as well, the college women’s 4×400 heats will also get going.
In the college women’s 4x100m, some of the teams to look out for will be Oregon, University of Technology (UTECH) from Jamaica, G.C. Foster (JAM), the highest finishers from last season (5th) and Florida State.
However, defending champion Texas A&M, which won seven straight college women’s 4x100m crowns at Penn Relays and last year’s runner-up Texas have both decided to compete elsewhere this season.
Elsewhere, on the first day of full competition, the Olympic Development women’s and wen’s 3000m Steeplechase, 5000m and 10,000m are all listed on the schedule for Thursday’s busy day.
Meanwhile, a number of field event competition will also be contested starting at 9:00 AM ET.
