The Man United manager arrived in Rotterdam without captain Wayne Rooney, full-backs Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia , as well as Jesse Lingard and Henrikh Mkhitaryan who were all involved in the Manchester derby against Manchester City over the weekend.

Mourinho says he wanted to give some of the regulars a break, especially Shaw, who will be replaced in the starting lineup by Marcos Rojo.

The Portuguese coach also dismissed suggestions that he left Shaw at home to block memories of the horrific leg-breaking injury he suffered in a Champions League defeat at PSV Eindhoven last September.

“No, I didn’t know that,” Jose told one journalist at his press conference when asked about Shaw incident. “The decision was not made thinking about that negative episode.

“The reason is simple – Marcos Rojo is a very good player who is working really well, working hard.

“My option in the last four games in the Premier League was Luke, Luke, Luke, Luke and I think it is time for Marcos to play, so it was a simple decision.”

England forward Marcus Rashford, who has impressed the manager so far this season, will also be given a first start of the season, while Juan Mata could also return to the starting XI in the No. 10 spot.

Matteo Darmian and Michael Carrick could also feature against Feyenoord on Thursday, with Mourinho revealing that he will play a strong Manchester United team in search of all three points in the group opener.

Meanwhile, also missing from the 20-man travelling contingent was versatile defender Phil Jones, who remained at the Aon Training Complex.

The England defender will be out of action for four weeks with a knee injury, Manchester United reported on Wednesday.

Manchester United Squad: De Gea, Romero, Johnstone, Darmian, Bailly, Blind, Fosu-Mensah, Rojo, Smalling, Carrick, Fellaini, Herrera, Mata, Memphis, Pogba, Schneiderlin, Young, Ibrahimovic, Martial, Rashford.
