MANCHESTER, Sporting Alert – Sergio Romero starts in goal for Manchester United, while Michel Vorm is the man handed the duty for Tottenham in today’s Premier League opener at Old Trafford.
With David de Gea left out of the squad for the contest, manager Louis van Gaal decided to give Romero his English Premier League debut with Sam Johnstone on the bench.
Van Gaal has also gone with Chris Smalling as the starting partner at centre-back for Daley Blind, after Phil Jones failed to convince his boss during a poor performance against Paris Saint Germain in the last preseason contest last month.
Matteo Darmian will also make his English Premier League debut at right back with Luke Shaw play on the left.
Elsewhere in Manchester United team news, Morgan Schneiderlin, Michael Carrick, Ashley Young, Juan Mata and Memphis Depay all start, with captain Wayne Rooney leading the attack and Javier Hernandez on the bench.
Meanwhile, as expected, Michel Vorm starts in goal for Tottenham, as Hugo Lloris is not yet at 100 percent and would be too risky to take on United.
Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen will start at centre-back, with Nabil Bentaleb, Nacer Chadli, who was impressive against AC Milan in the Audi Cup, Christian Eriksen and Mousa Dembele playing in the midfield.
Leading goalscorer Harry Kane, now wearing the No. 10 shirt, leads the attacking line, but the support on the bench in that department is limited.
Ryan Mason has passed a fitness test to be on the bench with Erik Lamela, Kieran Trippier, Dele Alli and Tom Carroll also subs.
On the Manchester United bench for this English Premier League season opener are the likes of Hernandez, Ander Herrera, Antonio Valencia and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
In the last meeting between Manchester United and Tottenham at Old Trafford last March, the Red Devils ran away 3-0 winners with the goals coming from Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney.
The visitors will be hoping to avenge that defeat as they look to break into the top four this season.
